The third Space
Approach
Relationship is where growth begins
Between boundaries and belonging, guidance and agency, accountability and compassion, who a young person has been told they are and who they are becoming—there is a third space.
That space is relationship.
The Third Space Approach helps families and youth-serving organizations build the kinds of relationships in which young people can feel known, develop new capacities, repair after difficulty, and flourish.
We don’t grow in isolation. we grow in relationship
Families, educators, and youth-serving organizations share a common hope: that young people will flourish—developing the confidence, skills, resilience, and sense of belonging they need to build meaningful lives. The Third Space Approach begins with the belief that this growth happens through relationship. When young people feel known, valued, and connected, they are better able to understand themselves, take healthy risks, navigate conflict, and develop new capacities.
Traditional approaches often treat youth behavior as something to correct, manage, or motivate—asking how adults can get a young person to comply, make better choices, or meet expectations. The Third Space Approach asks a different set of questions: What is this behavior communicating? What need, challenge, or capacity might be underneath it? And what kinds of relationships and environments would help this young person move toward greater agency, accountability, and connection? Rather than choosing between compassion and expectations, we help families and organizations create the conditions in which young people can be both supported and challenged to grow.
